Personal Discount for Shopify and the version for WooCommerce and Magento are two technically different applications despite similar functionality. Personal Discount for Shopify can be integrated with a number of different Email Service Providers such as Mailchimp, Shopify Email, Shopify notifications, Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailerlite etc., whereas the version for WooCommerce and Magento only integrates with Mailchimp.

# How does Personal Discount work?

Personal Discount generates unique discount codes that you can include in automated emails. The app does not send emails on its own, but instead, Personal Discount integrates with your email marketing provider and with email notifications sent by Shopify.

**How does Personal Discount work with Mailchimp?**

Personal Discount creates unique discount codes on specific events. It may be a new subscriber joining your audience in Mailchimp, a customer making a purchase, or a person abandoning their cart. The app saves the generated codes in your Shopify store back-end so they can be used at checkout. Discount codes are also being assigned to the members profiles in MailChimp. You can find them in subscriber profile information as *Shopify Discount Code* and include a discount code in your email template using a merge tag \*|DSCNT\_CODE|\*.&#x20;

**Pull or push?**

The key fact to understand how Personal Discount works is that it's the app pushing the codes to Mailchimp rather than Mailchimp pulling them from Personal Discount. That's why it's crucial to choose a right trigger, to point out the moment when a discount code should be created and pushed to Mailchimp.

**Example: discount code for a new subscriber**

<figure><img src="/files/DZptKZHYWCXB2S7HdCw6" alt="How does Personal Discount connect with Mailchimp scheme"><figcaption><p>How does Personal Discount connect with Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

1. Jane fills out your email subscription form.
2. Jane's data are being saved in MailChimp.
3. MailChimp notifies Personal Discount about a new subscriber.
4. Personal Discount generates a unique discount code `HELLO-GR8DL` and adds it to your Shopify store discounts.
5. Personal Discount assigns the generated code to Jane's profile in MailChimp under a merge tag `*|DSCNT_CODE|*`.
6. MailChimp sends a welcome email to Jane including the unique discount code `HELLO-GR8DL`.\
   To make this happen you need to [set up an Automated Campaign](https://kb.mailchimp.com/automation/create-an-automated-welcome-email) in MailChimp.

**How does Personal Discount with other email marketing providers?**

Personal Discount can also work with ActiveCampaign, Jilt, Klaviyo, MailerLite, Omnisend, Privy or nearly any other email marketing service. You can include a unique discount code as an image. The discount image is also a link that redirects to your website, and applies the discount code automatically at checkout. The discount is created individually for each recipient at the moment when they open the email.

**Demo**

You can see the app in action on the [Personal Discount Demo](https://personal-discount.myshopify.com/) store. When you subscribe to the mailing list you will receive a welcome email with the discount code created by the application.

Once you receive the discount code you will be able to use it at the checkout of the demo store.

# Frequently Asked Questions

**Will I be notified when I exceed my current plan limit?**

Yes, you will get an email notification when you are at 90% of your current plan limit, and then another email when you exceed your current plan limit

**Will the app stop generating discount codes when I cross the plan limit and don't upgrade immediately?**

In the past, until May 2020, we used to offer subscription plans that stop generating discount codes 3 days after exceeding the limit.

Current plans keep generating discount codes after surpassing the plan limit. You'll be charged for the additional codes at the beginning of next month. The price per additional code depends on your current plan:

* $0.05 per code on the Starter plan
* $0.02 per code on the Standard plan
* $0.01 per code on the Pro plan

You'll also get notified by email in case you reach a threshold when it's more cost-effective to switch to a higher plan.

**Does Personal Discount integrate with Shopify Email?**

Yes, since Shopify has provided the option to add a custom code snippet in a Shopify Email message template, you can integrate this app with Personal Discount. Shopify Email is on the list of Email Service Providers and you can select it when creating the automation.

**Is it possible to apply a discount together with free shipping?**

It's currently not possible to stack discount codes to offer both free shipping and discounted products. As a workaround, you can set a [free shipping rate](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shipping/setting-up-and-managing-your-shipping/setting-up-shipping-rates#create-free-shipping-rates) for selected countries.

**Can the app limit a discount based on the number of items purchased?**

Unfortunately, it's not possible to restrict the discount based on the number of items purchased.

**Could you update the app to make it possible to combine discount codes or specify additional restrictions?**

Personal Discount makes use of the discount validation mechanism provided by Shopify. It's technically not possible for an app to extend the validation rules behind the discount code input field. Only Shopify could add such options.

**How can I cancel my subscription?**

Please uninstall Personal Discount from your shop. It will cancel both the monthly subscription as well as usage charges.

**Why does N/A show up instead of a discount code?**

There are few cases when you or your customers may see N/A instead of a discount code:

* when a discount automation has been already deleted
* when a discount automation has been paused
* when you set up a discount to be created after a customer registers an account in your store whereas the app can't find a customer for the given email address
* when you set up a discount for abandoned carts but the app can't find an abandoned checkout associated with the given email address
* when you set up a discount to be created after a purchase ("Thank first-time customers" or "Follow-up on purchases" campaign) but the app can't find an order placed by a customer with the provided email address

# Configure discount

The discount settings consist of similar sections to those when you are creating a discount in the Shopify admin panel. In the app you can specify

* Discount code pattern&#x20;
* Options (discount type and value)
* Applies to
* Minimum requirement
* Usage limit
* Expiration date

<figure><img src="/files/FZVjAjVdK4S7N9dGHTLZ" alt="&#x22;Applies to&#x22; section Personal Discount automation settings"><figcaption><p>Personal Discount automation settings</p></figcaption></figure>

### Discount code pattern <a href="#discount-code-pattern" id="discount-code-pattern"></a>

Instead of a fixed code you can compose a pattern to create unique discount codes. A pattern consists of placeholders and fixed characters. Placeholders will be replaced with random characters according to given symbol. You can choose from following symbols:

* **A** - uppercase letters
* **a** - lowercase letters
* **9** - digits
* **X** - uppercase letters and digits
* **x** - lowercase letters and digits
* **#** - uppercase and lowercase letters and digits

Anything else is a fixed character. Fixed characters will stay the same in a generated code as they are in the pattern. If you want to specify a fixed character that is a placeholder symbol you can quote it with single quotes to prevent replacing with random value.

Example patterns:

| PATTERN      | SAMPLE CODES                          |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------- |
| ######       | FdVh8i, pw3gVp, S7MEaD                |
| AAAA-9999    | CDQY-8621, EMPO-8520, QDST-5291       |
| XXX-XXX-XXX  | 7FK-085-4W0, GT4-W6X-UT5, RNQ-A58-XQ6 |
| HELLO-XXXXX  | HELLO-ADA7W, HELLO-VRPZV, HELLO-Y8GSP |
| 'CART'-XXXXX | CART-5VHXN, CART-NAYTM, CART-YO52A    |

### Discount type <a href="#discount-type" id="discount-type"></a>

There are 3 discount types:

* Percentage discount
* Fixed amount
* Free shipping

### Applies to <a href="#applies-to" id="applies-to"></a>

Select what the discount will apply to: **Entire order**, **Selected collections** or **Selected products**.

<figure><img src="/files/AQpwePFSn7dbrSy2pmbg" alt="The section apply to of Personal Discount automation"><figcaption><p><em>Applies to</em> section</p></figcaption></figure>

### Minimum requirement <a href="#minimum-requirement" id="minimum-requirement"></a>

Select **Minimum purchase amount** if you want the customers to spend a minimum amount to qualify for the discount.

<figure><img src="/files/IzV0XUgYnWpKPIUnNaeg" alt="Personal Discount settings Minimum requirements section"><figcaption><p><em>Minimum requirement</em> section</p></figcaption></figure>

### Usage limit <a href="#usage-limit" id="usage-limit"></a>

Define how many times a customer can redeem the discount code.

<figure><img src="/files/CZOzOAe73LdKahvD8eNP" alt="The section usage limit of discount code Personal Discount automation"><figcaption><p><em>Usage limit</em> section</p></figcaption></figure>

### Expiration date <a href="#expiration-date" id="expiration-date"></a>

Discount codes may be not limited in time or they may expire certain number of days after creation.

Select Expires: Never to make the discount codes not limited in time.

<figure><img src="/files/R5bKyMWKeSBdDLsVlWBq" alt="Set that discount code never expires - Personal Discount app for Shopify"><figcaption><p><em>Expiration date</em> section (never)</p></figcaption></figure>

Select Expires: After to make the discount code expired specified number of days after creation.

<figure><img src="/files/N1OU2V0Jcvzen5thMGCo" alt="Set after how many days a code expires - Personal Discount app for Shopify"><figcaption><p><em>Expiration date</em> section (after how many days)</p></figcaption></figure>

**Notice!** The consequence of having relative expiration date is that the generated codes can no longer be grouped. They will appear separately in the Discounts list in your Shopify admin panel.

# How to send an order confirmation email with a discount code in Shopify?

Are you wondering what to do to make an order confirmation encouraging repeat purchases from your Shopify shop? Here is a guide on how to use Personal Discount with Shopify order confirmation.

Firstly open your **Shopify admin panel** > **Apps** > **Personal Discount**. Click the **Add automation** button. Select **Shopify** as your **Email Service Provider** and the **campaign type** - **Follow up on purchases**.

<figure><img src="/files/XwshdHTbjrEbK6aT03a7" alt="Add Personal Discount follow up on purchases automation animated"><figcaption><p>Add Personal Discount follow up on purchases automation</p></figcaption></figure>

In the next step fill out the form of your **automation details**. Here is a useful guide on [how to configure discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount).

Now **save** your automation and copy the code snippet to your clipboard.

<figure><img src="/files/1XjAHm5gQX5S96cG5Aeu" alt="Copy the code snipepet from Personal Discount annotated"><figcaption><p>Copy the code snippet from Personal Discount</p></figcaption></figure>

Navigate to **Settings** > **Notifications** > **Order confirmation** and insert your code snippet into your confirmation email template. If you are not sure where to place the code snippet, then the safest place is below the following line:

```html
<p>{{ email_body }}</p>
```

You can paste it for example here:

<figure><img src="/files/nQoyC3DDxvkDNyHNnARd" alt="Paste the code snippet into order confirmation template annotated"><figcaption><p>Paste the code snippet into order confirmation template</p></figcaption></figure>

Don't forget to save changes to your template.

<figure><img src="/files/6KLp8cTRrokvU2RO6MuQ" alt="Save Shopify order confirmation template annotated"><figcaption><p>Save Shopify order confirmation template</p></figcaption></figure>

When your customers place an order, they will receive a discount code for their next purchases, included in an order confirmation email.

<figure><img src="/files/0HnTnUUmb4ePnonWdEN4" alt="Shopify order confirmation with a discount code from Personal Discount"><figcaption><p>Shopify order confirmation with a discount code from Personal Discount</p></figcaption></figure>

# How to include a discount code in Shopify abandoned cart notification

Are you worried that your Shopify customers don't complete purchases? You can send them a notification with a discount code to increase the chance for recovering abandoned carts.

Let's start with opening your **Shopify admin panel** > **Apps** > **Personal Discount**. Click the **Add automation** button. Then select **Shopify** as your **Email Service Provider** and the **Campaign Type**: **Recover abandoned carts**.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/v7Ql3ErPorIfM8Wo41Kl" alt="Add Shopify recover abandoned carts automation with Personal Discount animated"><figcaption><p>Add recover abandoned carts automation for Shopify</p></figcaption></figure>

Now you can set your automation details. [How to configure discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount) is a nice article on that.

Meanwhile, you can click the highlighted link. It will open in a new browser tab. We will come back to this in a moment.

<figure><img src="/files/Yfs4AbCnjxbT8ZX1jIn1" alt="Navigate to Shopify abandoned cart notification template annotated"><figcaption><p>Navigate to Shopify abandoned cart notification template</p></figcaption></figure>

If you set all parameters, save your automation and copy the code snippet to the clipboard.

<figure><img src="/files/NZEdYQkW1zii2X9EPELn" alt="Copy the code snippet from Personal Discount annotated"><figcaption><p>Copy the code snippet from Personal Discount</p></figcaption></figure>

In the next step navigate to **Settings** > **Notifications** > **Abandoned checkouts** and insert your code snippet into your confirmation email template. If you are not sure where to place the code snippet, then the safest place is below the following line:

```html
<p>{{ email_body }}</p>
```

You can paste it for example here:

<figure><img src="/files/NwhcCtMeVenGApaQ5CJg" alt="Insert the code snippet into Shopify abandoned cart notification template annotated"><figcaption><p>Insert the code snippet into abandoned cart notification template</p></figcaption></figure>

Now **save** the template changes.

<figure><img src="/files/28SQZ9fSx0h06OhQu8Y3" alt="Save Shopify abandoned cart notification template annotated"><figcaption><p>Save your template</p></figcaption></figure>

Finally, switch out to the **Abandoned Checkouts** settings that you have opened in a separate browser tab. The most important is to make sure that abandoned checkout emails are enabled for your store. Here you can also set additional options that you can see below.

<figure><img src="/files/jNRr50ZvRN1GdXamx89R" alt="How to enable sending abandoned checkout notification Shopify"><figcaption><p>Enable sending abandoned checkout notification Shopify</p></figcaption></figure>

Thanks to this automation, the chances of a customer completing a purchase in your shop will increase significantly.

# How to send a unique discount code to customers who create an account?

Shopify sends a welcome email to customers who create an account in your store. By default the email looks like this:

<figure><img src="/files/RCaKytt56ff3x27GAMjb" alt="Default Shopify welcome email to customers who created an account"><figcaption><p>Default Shopify welcome email to customers who created an account</p></figcaption></figure>

If you want to include a unique discount code (each customer gets an individual coupon code), then follow the steps below.

#### Set up a discount automation in Personal Discount

1\. Add a new automation in Personal Discount.

2\. Select **Shopify** as your email provider.

<figure><img src="/files/avlUXw5Vd66SjrQLpke9" alt="Select Shopify notifications as your Email Service Provider annotated"><figcaption><p>Select Shopify notifications as your Email Service Provider</p></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/1nFkfUAvHfifQojzjic4" alt="Select the welcome new accounts campaign type annotated"><figcaption><p>Select the <em>welcome new accounts</em> campaign type</p></figcaption></figure>

4\. Set up discount options and copy the code snippet.

<figure><img src="/files/4gtGUZ567EeWecaxU2n6" alt="Personal Discount automation settings annotated"><figcaption><p>Personal Discount automation settings</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Add the code snippet to the Customer account welcome email template

1\. Nagivate to Settings in your Shopify admin panel and the to Notifications:

<figure><img src="/files/PxebChoOHu5UA4IoX6Od" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2\. Scroll down to Customer section and open **Customer account welcome**.

<figure><img src="/files/W0ZRkduvGQmwMUxB1OLu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

3\. Find the following line:

```html
<p>{{ email_body }}</p>
```

4\. Paste the code snippet below the line:

<figure><img src="/files/MmbnP27MlfoegYLFUQjg" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

5\. Preview the email to check if the discount code appears in the right place.

<figure><img src="/files/uf6SOxWmzhM6LwMNRSrC" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

6\. Save the email template.

Congratulations! From now on, customers who create an account in your shop will receive a discount code for their next purchase.

# How to send a discount code only if a specific product has been purchased?

Using Personal Discount, you can add a unique discount code to the order confirmation email that Shopify sends after every purchase. However, you may want to offer a discount based on certain conditions. For example, you may want to send a coupon code only if a customer purchased a specific SKU.

Normally, Personal Discount gives you a code snippet like below to insert in the order confirmation email template:

```liquid
<div style="text-align: center; margin: 20px">
    <a href="https://render.personaldiscount.me/discount/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx/apply?email={{email}}">
        <img src="https://render.personaldiscount.me/discount/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx/image?email={{email}}" alt="Discount Code">
    </a>
</div>
```

To send a coupon only if a particular item was purchased, you need to add two lines above and to lines below the code snippet:

```liquid
{% for line in line_items %}
{% if line.sku == "A123" %}
<div style="text-align: center; margin: 20px">
     <a href="https://render.personaldiscount.me/discount/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx/apply?email={{email}}">
         <img src="https://render.personaldiscount.me/discount/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx/image?email={{email}}" alt="Discount Code">
    </a>
</div>
{% endif %}
{% endfor %}
```

Please note that you need to replace **A123** with the SKU of the product that you want to target.

The order confirmation email will now include a discount code only if the SKU has been added to the order. Other customers who have not purchased the specific item won't receive the discount.

# How to set up an automated welcome email in Mailchimp

Follow a step by step guide on how to set up the automated welcome email in Mailchimp and include a unique discount code from Personal Discount.

Personal Discount creates unique coupon codes for your email subscribers. However, to send out the discount codes you'll need to set up an automated welcome email in Mailchimp.&#x20;

**Personal Discount Settings**

Navigate to Personal Discount. Click on **Add automation** and connect the app with your Mailchimp account if it has not already been connected.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/DOWt55fVhNC7uUzc7Yrm" alt="Personal Discount: create new automation and connect to the Mailchimp account animated"><figcaption><p>Personal Discount: create new automation and connect to the Mailchimp account</p></figcaption></figure>

In the next step, provide the automation name and select the audience. Then pick the **New Subscriber** trigger. You can also decide whether to add new customers who accept marketing (for example at the Shopify checkout) to the Mailchimp list.

<figure><img src="/files/RGLw5fivm4m1SsFZC0B8" alt="Personal Discount setting for welcome automation with Mailchimp animated annotated"><figcaption><p>Personal Discount setting for welcome automation with Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

Now you can set up details of your automation such as a discount value, usage limit, or expiration date. Learn more from [this article on how to configure your discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount).

#### Edit an existing welcome email automation <a href="#edit-existing-welcome-email" id="edit-existing-welcome-email"></a>

If you're creating the welcome email from scratch then [move to the next section](#create-an-automated-welcome-email-in-mailchimp). Otherwise, if you already have a running welcome email, navigate to the **Automations section**, and click on **All Journeys**. Locate the automated welcome email, show the drop-down menu next to View Report and click on **View Journey**. Then hit **Pause & Edit,** click on **Send email** point → **Edit Email Content**.

<figure><img src="/files/2V4uwzIkiLN9Wfbx7DPJ" alt="Edit Mailchimp Journey animated"><figcaption><p>Edit Mailchimp Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

At this point you can [skip to the section on how to include discount code in your welcome automation](#include-discount-code-merge-tag).

#### Create an automated welcome email in Mailchimp

Log in to your Mailchimp account and click on **Automations** from the left-hand sidebar. Then hit **Build from scratch** and type a name of your new automation.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/Qm36sKW7MaOsRj6hd5NY" alt="Add new Customer Journey in Mailchimp animated"><figcaption><p>Add new Customer Journey in Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

**Choose a staring point**, for us it is **Signing up**. You can also decide whether to **include imported contacts**.

<figure><img src="/files/eRu7Qo3FJhqNPzzwVl8s" alt="Choose a starting point for Mailchimp welcome automation animated"><figcaption><p>Choose a starting point for Mailchimp welcome automation</p></figcaption></figure>

Select the action that will be taken when a customer enters the journey. In our case the action is **Send email**. Then design your welcome message. You can choose one of pre-designed themes for this.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/taFv26dOu0RdOuQKHazu" alt="Add an email as journey point in Mailchimp welcome automation annotated animated"><figcaption><p>Add an email as journey point in Mailchimp welcome automation</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Include discount code merge tag

While preparing the email template, insert Shopify Discount Code merge tag into one of the merge text elements. It can be modified in the same way as other text. **Save & Close** the text element and if your template is ready, hit **Save and Return to Journey**.

<figure><img src="/files/1UXVjKbaQQ8EvHyc3qiZ" alt="Insert Personal Discount code into Mailchimp welcome email template animated"><figcaption><p>Insert Personal Discount code into Mailchimp welcome email template</p></figcaption></figure>

In an actual email, the merge tag will be replaced with a unique discount code.

#### Ensure discount code is not blank <a href="#ensure-discount-code-is-not-blank" id="ensure-discount-code-is-not-blank"></a>

At this point, you could start the automation and it would work most of the times. However, there may be instances where Mailchimp is faster with sending the welcome email than Personal Discount is at creating the discount code and pushing it to Mailchimp. In such case, the email would be sent out without a discount code. See the article below for more details.

[Discount codes are not appearing in the emails sent by Mailchimp](/personal-discount-for-shopify/troubleshooting/discount-codes-are-not-appearing-in-the-emails-sent-by-mailchimp)

#### Activate Mailchimp Journey

When the automation is ready, it's high time to activate it. Hit **Continue** and **Turn On**. Then the Journey will appear on the automations list with the status Active.

<figure><img src="/files/hu5wWwJuNYpPcZIjZotF" alt="Activate Mailchimp welcome automation animated"><figcaption><p>Activate Mailchimp welcome automation</p></figcaption></figure>

From now on, your customers will receive a welcome message with a discount code when they sign up to your newsletter.

# How to set up an abandoned cart email in Mailchimp?

**Integrate your Shopify store with Mailchimp**

To set up an automated cart recovery email, you need an app that can synchronize abandoned carts with Mailchimp, such as [Mailchimp: Email Marketing](https://apps.shopify.com/mailchimp). Install it in your store and connect with your Mailchimp account.

While configuring the Mailchimp app, ensure that the list chosen in **Linked Audience** section matches the list selected in Personal Discount. Then hit **Sync now**.

<figure><img src="/files/yxfdPCR95RBAqNuochii" alt="How to synchronize your Shopify store with the Mailchimp account animated"><figcaption><p>Synchronize your Shopify store with the Mailchimp account</p></figcaption></figure>

**Personal Discount Settings**

Navigate to Personal Discount. Click on **Add automation** and connect the app with your Mailchimp account.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/28kHAnBTLcWuzVefBv7C" alt="How to create Personal Discount automation for Mailchimp animated"><figcaption><p>Create Personal Discount automation for Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

In the next step, provide the automation name, select the audience (the same as in the Mailchimp app). Then pick the Abandoned Cart trigger and specify a time period after which a cart should be considered as abandoned.

<figure><img src="/files/pEBO0uH6jzDFi0grNyGk" alt="Personal Discount settings for Abandoned Cart automation with Mailchimp animated"><figcaption><p>Personal Discount settings for Abandoned Cart automation with Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

Personal Discount adds a customer who abandoned a cart to the selected list in MailChimp. The app also creates a unique discount code and assigns it to the member's profile as a merge tag **DSCNT\_CODE**.&#x20;

Now you can set up details of your automation such as a discount value, usage limit, or expiration date. Learn more from [this article on how to configure your discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount).

**Mailchimp automation**

Switch over to Mailchimp to create a Journey for customers that abandoned their cart. Click on **Automations** on the left sidebar → **Build from scratch** and type a name of your automation.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/0mhrHrigPrOPnZEVBliB" alt="How to create new automation in Mailchimp animated"><figcaption><p>Create new automation in Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

Now set the **starting point**. Select **Abandons cart** as the starting point from the available options. Then choose the **Store name** from which customers will take part in this campaign. You can also indicate if the **Customer Cart** should **contain** any or a specific product and **Abandoned Cart Wait Time**. The **Wait for** value cannot be shorter than the one specified in Personal Discount.&#x20;

# Send unique coupons from Mailchimp to customers who bought a specific product

Establishing a long-term relationship with your customers it’s a must in today’s world. Once the transaction is being made it’s your turn to build the relation.

One of the most common (and one of the most successful!) ways to do so is awarding your customer base with a discount for future shopping. It can help your business with a cross-selling as well - offering a special offer for products related to what’s been bought already.

Learn how to generate unique discounts for a customer who just made a purchase of a specific item from your shop with us!

How does it work?

1. Personal Discount generates a discount code after every purchase of a specific product.
2. Mailchimp sends a follow-up message with a discount code - only to customers who had purchased a specific (chosen) product from a store

**How to do it?**

Configuring Personal Discount

For starters, you will need to configure Personal Discount to generate coupons for New Order.

1. Start from visiting your Dashboard and clicking on the **Add automation** button;
2. Connect to your Mailchimp account;
3. Select **New Order** as a trigger to generate discounts;
4. Now, you can set up the discount settings according to your needs.

<figure><img src="/files/K9SczdcGAgXZBvVX8aRw" alt="Personal Discount settings in automation for customers who bought a specific product"><figcaption><p>Personal Discount settings in automation for customers who bought a specific product</p></figcaption></figure>

#### Configuring Mailchimp

First of all, to enable e-commerce campaigns on MailChimp, you will need to install [Mailchimp: Email Marketing](https://apps.shopify.com/mailchimp) app.

The next step is creating a Mailchimp campaign - to do so, you will need to visit your Mailchimp dashboard, open the **Automations** section and hit **Build from scratch**. Enter your automation name and click on **Start building**.

<figure><img src="/files/temTgCq4LjWJGkJpzguw" alt="How to add new Mailchimp Customer Journey animated"><figcaption><p>Add new Mailchimp Customer Journey</p></figcaption></figure>

Now **Choose A Starting point**. We want a customer to enter the automation when they **Buys a specific product**. Then select this product from the list. &#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/oG2KDLzo97U347dZcC2q" alt="How to set a starting point for Mailchimp automation animated"><figcaption><p>Set a starting point for Mailchimp automation</p></figcaption></figure>

The flow trigger is set up, so now **Add a journey point**. Select the **Send email** action from the available options and choose a method how to prepare a message template.

<figure><img src="/files/XiDYAhw9zmxagOjUxm5e" alt="Configure a journey point in Mailchimp automation animated"><figcaption><p>Configure a journey point in Mailchimp automation</p></figcaption></figure>

While fine-tuning the email template, insert Shopify Discount Code merge tag into one of the merge text elements. It can be modified in the same way as other text. **Save & Close** the text element and if your template is ready, hit **Save and Return to Journey**.

<figure><img src="/files/dHpXHZIqj7l5ZoiPuVtn" alt="Insert a discount code merge tag into Mailchimp email template animated"><figcaption><p>Insert the discount code merge tag into Mailchimp email template</p></figcaption></figure>

When the automation is ready, it's high time to activate it. You can also decide if contacts should repeat Journey by checking a proper box. Hit **Continue** and **Turn On**. Then the Journey will appear on the automations list with the status Active.

<figure><img src="/files/WfUcYuyl3BGx1YifuMaF" alt="How to activate Mailchimp automation annotated animated"><figcaption><p>Activate Mailchimp automation</p></figcaption></figure>

From now on, your customers will receive a follow-up message with a discount code when they buy a specific product.

# How to display a discount code as an image in a Mailchimp message

Would you like the discount code in the Mailchimp message to be displayed as an image that, when clicked on, redirects the customer to your shop with the discount code applied?

This is a method that Personal Discount uses to integrate with any other email marketing service (other than Mailchimp, but it also works with Mailchimp). The HTML snippet generates a unique discount code when a recipient opens the email for the first time. The key advantage, in this case, is that it's no longer needed to hold on sending the email until the discount is ready. So the filter condition "Shopify Discount Code is not blank" is not necessary. Nevertheless, there is also a little disadvantage in that the discount code is shown as an image, so it's not possible to copy the code. However, the image is wrapped with a link redirecting to the checkout and automatically applying the discount code.

Firstly, navigate to your **Shopify dashboard** ➜ **Apps** ➜ **Personal Discount** and hit **Add automation.** Then, select **Other** as your Email Service Provider and the desired campaign type.

<figure><img src="/files/K8vGOwgprQfunP93ftjL" alt="How to add Personal Discount automation animated"><figcaption><p>Add Personal Discount automation</p></figcaption></figure>

Set up the discount according to your needs. For more information have a look at the article on [how to configure a discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount).

Next, copy the HTML code snippet that you can find at the bottom of the automation settings page.

<figure><img src="/files/lNLr8s3ivirhUeXmCcAx" alt="How to copy the code snippet from Personal Discount animated"><figcaption><p>Copy the code snippet from Personal Discount</p></figcaption></figure>

Now switch over to Mailchimp and edit an email template from your automation. If your template contains **\*|DSCNT\_CODE|\***, delete it. Next, add a code block to the email template and edit this element. Delete the default code snippet and paste the one that you copied from Personal Discount.

<figure><img src="/files/zJjsPOfWgYbHI4ugZQi2" alt="How to insert code snippet from Personal Discount into Mailchimp email template animated"><figcaption><p>Insert the code snippet from Personal Discount</p></figcaption></figure>

Now replace both occurrences of **{{email}}** with **\*|EMAIL|\*** in the code snippet you just pasted.

<figure><img src="/files/kGLNjcRiXQOfeW6B9xJc" alt="How to replace email merge tag in the Personal Discount code snippet animated"><figcaption><p>Replace <strong>{{email}}</strong> with Mailchimp customer email address merge tag</p></figcaption></figure>

Save the email template. Finally, remove the condition **discount code is not blank** if it was set.

<figure><img src="/files/qQt2gkZq7RmLGsYpzWHl" alt="How to disable Shopify Discount code is not blank filter in Mailchimp animated"><figcaption><p>Disable Shopify Discount code is not blank filter in Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

From now on, a unique discount code will be generated when a recipient opens the email for the first time. A code will be displayed as a clickable image.

<figure><img src="/files/UFKQkqk1yky65SedBVzE" alt="Shopify Personal Discount code in an email"><figcaption><p>Shopify Personal Discount code in an email</p></figcaption></figure>

# Create a link to apply discount automatically

Shopify provides the mechanism of [shareable discount links](https://www.shopify.com/blog/shareable-discount-links). In a nutshell, when your customers click such a link, then they are redirected to your store homepage, and the discount is automatically applied at checkout.

When you use an email marketing service other than Mailchimp, then Personal Discount gives you a code snippet that already works like the shareable discount link.

If you use Mailchimp, then you'll need to prepare a sharable discount link manually. To do the trick you need to construct the link in your email template as follows: `https://{shop_name}.myshopify.com/discount/*|DSCNT_CODE|*` where `{shop_name}` should be replaced with your shop name.

<figure><img src="/files/To4J5CEJDc2B6XDBbYTw" alt="Email template sharable discount link for Shopify"><figcaption><p>Email template with sharable discount link for Shopify</p></figcaption></figure>

A final email will look for example like this:

<figure><img src="/files/quiD8Wz4NEAKligjtpiA" alt="Email template sharable discount link for Shopify annotated"><figcaption><p>Discount code in Mailchimp displayed as a sharable link</p></figcaption></figure>

When the link is clicked then the discount will be automatically applied at checkout:

<figure><img src="/files/9cb7imASBr6neQQaA4O7" alt="Sharable discount link to Shopify checkout annotated"><figcaption><p>Sharable discount link to Shopify checkout</p></figcaption></figure>

# Connect to Mailchimp

First step to setup Personal Discount is to connect with Mailchimp. Personal Discount integrates with Mailchimp to get notified about new subscribers and assign unique discount codes to their profiles

To start off click the Connect button in the Mailchimp section on the settings page:

<figure><img src="/files/cZ7GUxNX14bcm3G62cj9" alt="Connect the Shopify store to your Mailchimp account annotated"><figcaption><p>Connect the Shopify store to your Mailchimp account</p></figcaption></figure>

You will see a screen to enter a username and password of your Mailchimp account:

<figure><img src="/files/cOvtHWWVCN0j4N2llF7V" alt="Log in and authorize to your Mailchimp account annotated"><figcaption><p>Log in and authorize to your Mailchimp account</p></figcaption></figure>

Personal Discount does not store your credentials not even sees them for a moment. Authorization is handled by Mailchimp and if it passes then Personal Discount gets only an authorization token.

Your username in Mailchimp is typically different than your email address. If you get an error saying "Sorry, we couldn't find an account with that username", then please try recovering your username by providing your email address here <https://login.mailchimp.com/login/forgot-username/>

When you log in successfully then you get back to the settings page. Now you can choose a list that you want to be served by Personal Discount:

<figure><img src="/files/dNZ8vVesa6j2yq6FHDdl" alt="Select recipients list Mailchimp annotated"><figcaption><p>Select recipients list Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

Once you selected the list hit Save:

# How to create a birthday campaign with a discount code using Mailchimp

Personal Discount does not support a dedicated trigger to generate discount codes on a birthday with Mailchimp. Nevertheless, there is a clever workaround. With this approach, the discount code displays as a clickable image that will redirect a customer to your store with a discount applied.

Start by creating new automation in Personal Discount. Click on **Add automation**. Select **Other** as your Email Service Provider and **Happy Birthday** as the campaign type.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/ldyV9nLuirHd3qMAeGk2" alt="How to create Happy Birthday automation in Personal Discount animated"><figcaption><p>Create Happy Birthday automation in Personal Discount</p></figcaption></figure>

Set the parameters of discount codes that will be created by this automation. Find more in the article on [how to configure discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount) to make the most of the options provided by the app.

Once you have completed this stage, **save** your automation and **copy** the code snippet.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/ERV0oUtGkoDKCigRaBWE" alt="Personal Discount: copy the code snippet animated"><figcaption><p>Personal Discount: copy the code snippet</p></figcaption></figure>

The next step is creating a birthday campaign in Mailchimp. You can do this using **Journey** or **Classic Automations**. Navigate to the **Mailchimp dashboard** > **Automations** > **Build from scratch**. Type your Journey name and hit **Start Building**.

<figure><img src="/files/lSQiPSqNV5cXxPOeHlkC" alt="How to create a new Journey from scratch in Mailchimp animated"><figcaption><p>Create a new Journey from scratch in Mailchimp</p></figcaption></figure>

Set **Birthday** as the starting point of your automation. Decide how many days before the subscriber's Birthday date you want to send a message to them and indicate the name of the field where this date is stored in Mailchimp.

<figure><img src="/files/9PIDfNOpXDFO798cvJqg" alt="Mailchimp: how to set the starting point of Birthday automation animated annotated"><figcaption><p>Mailchimp: set the starting point of Birthday automation</p></figcaption></figure>

**Add a Journey point**. We want to **send email**. Next, design your message. You can choose from the themes or build an email from scratch.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/XfDPXaef1tP2Kr67s49H" alt="Mailchimp add a Journey point: send email animated"><figcaption><p>Mailchimp - add a Journey point: send email</p></figcaption></figure>

Customize your email template. Next, drag and drop a code element into the place where you want a discount code to be displayed. Delete the placeholder div and paste the code snippet from Personal Discount. Then replace both occurrences of **{{ email }}** with **\*|EMAIL|\*** in the code snippet. **Save & close** the code element. You will see an example discount code in your email template.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/8l3SBGyO20akT36DZz3r" alt="How to insert discount code into Mailchimp birthday campaign email animated"><figcaption><p>Insert discount code into Mailchimp birthday campaign email</p></figcaption></figure>

When your email template is ready, hit **Save and Return to Journey**. Then click on **Continue** and **Turn On** to activate the automation. Your automation will appear on the list in **Overview** of the **Automations** section.&#x20;

One of the greatest ways to build loyalty with your customers is to reward them with a discount code for their next purchase when they buy something in your Shopify store.

From this article, you will learn how to create a post-purchase campaign with ConvertKit and Personal Discount.

Let's start by preparing post-purchase automation in the Personal Discount app. Open your **Shopify dashboard** > **Apps** > **Personal Discount** > **Add automation**. In the next steps pick **ConvertKit** as your Email Service Provider and **Follow up on purchases** as the Campaign Type.

<figure><img src="/files/EYUqbkvmUkneeYUrwLg3" alt="How to create follow up on purchases automation using Personal Discount for Shopify and ConvertKit animated"><figcaption><p>Create Personal Discount Follow up on purchases automation with ConvertKit</p></figcaption></figure>

Next, specify parameters of your automation such as the code pattern, the discount value, the expiration date, etc. Here is the guide on [how to configure discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount).&#x20;

When you have finished setting up the automation, save it and copy the code snippet at the bottom of the page to the clipboard.

<figure><img src="/files/qautTW7Admf8OcBWI79D" alt="Copy the code snippet from Personal Discount to the clipboard animated"><figcaption><p>Copy the code snippet to the clipboard</p></figcaption></figure>

Select the **Email subscriber list**.

<figure><img src="/files/ZWNiB24XlRw6eeegzaIZ" alt="Klaviyo Birtday pop-up subscribers list annotated"><figcaption><p>Klaviyo Birtday pop-up subscribers list</p></figcaption></figure>

Now, go to the second step of your pop-up. Here, for example, you can change the date format. Notice that Klaviyo has defined the date formats required for the automation to work correctly. It is MM/DD/YYYY or YYYY-MM-DD format. For more information, see the Klaviyo article [Create birthday emails for subscribers (with best practices)](https://www.klaviyo.com/blog/why-to-send-birthday-emails-to-your-subscribers).

<figure><img src="/files/uZS0ozakinHMfTqDY0bV" alt="How to change birthday date format in Klaviyo pop-up annotated"><figcaption><p>Birthday date format Klaviyo pop-up</p></figcaption></figure>

When your pop-up is finished, you can publish it.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/uDNwqheClj4g5xeWVdhR" alt="How to publish pop-up in Klaviyo"><figcaption><p>Publish pop-up in Klaviyo</p></figcaption></figure>

To publish your pop-up, there is also a confirmation in Shopify needed. When you click **Publish Form and Go To Shopify**, Klaviyo will redirect you to the appropriate subpage of the Shopify admin panel.

<figure><img src="/files/5LZ9IYZSwpXYvsAymHzc" alt="How to enable Klaviyo pop-up in Shopify template annotated"><figcaption><p>Enable Klaviyo pop-up in Shopify store template</p></figcaption></figure>

Now your customers can get a discount code as a birthday gift.

# How to create a pop-up and include a discount code in welcome emails with the Vitals app

Do you want to encourage new subscribers to buy from your shop? The best way is to create a campaign with a discount code. Find instructions on how to do this using Personal Discount with Vitals.

Open your **Personal Discount** app and **Add automation**. Select '**Other**' as your email service and **Welcome new subscribers** as the campaign type.

<figure><img src="/files/hyLTBWymrG6hUVmNKAeh" alt="Add Personal Discount welcome new subscribers automation with Other email service animated"><figcaption><p>Add Personal Discount welcome new subscribers automation with Other email service provider</p></figcaption></figure>

Now fill out the form with automation details. If you need more information about that, here is a useful article on [how to configure discount](/personal-discount-for-shopify/configure-discount). Save your automation and copy the code snippet to the clipboard.

<figure><img src="/files/LEPAKshGnDwhqhvNs9Kv" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Switch out to your **Vitals dashboard**. From the left-hand bar, click **Engage customers** then **Email Marketing**.

<figure><img src="/files/eCirHFc2D8eEHvrNAFvP" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Open the **Welcome** automation.

<figure><img src="/files/aS0m80Db0I15AgmKnZJB" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Now enable your automation status and decide how many messages will be sent to your customer. In that case, one is enough. You can disable **Message #2** and **Message #3**. Edit **Message #1** which will contain a discount code.

<figure><img src="/files/i7YZdbREDnOMlxXBgacg" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Set config for your message then go to the content. To include the discount code into your mail you need to drag and drop the **HTML element**, as you can see below.

<figure><img src="/files/jFHbpdtg33zniIjBBPaZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Delete the existing code snippet and paste the one from your Personal Discount automation.

<figure><img src="/files/twlucQonSPIsTZH50zMF" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Now you need to modify this code snippet a bit. Delete **{{email}}** and paste\
**{{ customer\_email }}** in two places marked below.

<figure><img src="/files/eUY4MyATFwONfUUjrP0Z" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**Save** all changes.

<figure><img src="/files/eglz6ojgEz3Vrqdgxc9X" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Don't forget to enable the **Email Marketing** app.

<figure><img src="/files/TigFdbBq2rMYyrcn9ere" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Now create your pop-up. Go to **Capture Leads** > **Pop-up**. Click '**Create**' and select **Lead Capture** type.

<figure><img src="/files/DvoVD08emv410c9XouJQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Customize your pop-up template. Enable this one and save all changes.

<figure><img src="/files/aGLS71citxyxp9tNWbAe" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Also, enable the pop-up app. If something doesn't work as you expected, visit the '**Settings**' tab.

<figure><img src="/files/U8uV2onOuSNhbVaj1Lvb" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Now you can test the behavior of your automation. A unique discount code will be included in an email message.

# Offer a free product to your newsletter subscribers

Offering a free product is a powerful incentive to sign up for your email list.

Offering a discount is not enough to convince people to sign up for your email list? Consider giving away a free product. It doesn't have to be an expensive item, but giving it away for free will do wonders. If you additionally offer free shipping over a certain amount, then customers will be tempted to add more items to their carts.

#### How to set up a free product discount?

Let's say you sell apparel, and you want to give away a tube scarf that you normally sell for $9.90&#x20;

You'll need to set up a discount code with the following combination of settings:

1. Select fixed amount as discount type
2. Set the amount to the product price ($9.90 in our example)
3. Limit the discount to the selected product&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/LPBbIpqu0MhUSIQrECVL" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Why not 100% off instead of fixed amount? A 100% off discount could be applied to any quantity of the selected product. For example, your customer could add 10 buffs to the cart and all of them would be free. On the other hand, if you wanted to limit the 100% off discount with minimum purchase amount, then it would cause the discount to not work at all because the minimum amount applies to selected products. Only the fixed amount discount will guarantee that your customers will get only one item for free.

After applying a free product discount the checkout will look like this:

<figure><img src="/files/8WYEim7ZNdFtghVMgYva" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# How to create a link to the checkout with a discount code applied in the Shopify store?

There are many ways to encourage customers to buy in our Shopify store. One of them is to make the shopping experience as simple as possible. Therefore, we can redirect the customer directly to the checkout with the discount code applied.

Firstly add the **Buy button** to your **Sales Channels** if you haven't already done so. You will find all the necessary information in the article on [**Adding the Buy Button sales channel**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/buy-button/setup). Now you can easily create a **Shopify checkout link**. Open the product's edit page to which you want to create a link. Now click **More actions** and select **Create checkout link** from the dropped-down menu.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/CzSn03lkpjpJxRsUylPk" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Copy the created link to the clipboard. Have a look at the article on the [**checkout link**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/details/checkout-link) if you want to link several products or different variants.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/QrrevEy6WpkSOkfjR2HM" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The next step is switching out to the **Personal Discount** app. You can add new automation or edit the existing one. Scroll down to the **Redirect** section. At this point, we need to modify our Shopify checkout link a bit. Personal Discount redirect creates a link that looks like this:&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/19FvTiPi3gkKtg0Zk133" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

As we can see, there is one question mark in our link. The construction of the URL doesn't allow to use of further ones. So if there is another question mark in your checkout link, you need to remove it along with the part following it. Please look below:

<figure><img src="/files/LBaXzJlf5DuId8K4R265" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

And this is how you should fill out the **Redirect** section in the Personal Discount automation settings:

<figure><img src="/files/v88UgSwDZGXfEUeMzZ2e" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Select the option that you want to redirect to another page within your store and paste the proper part of the URL.

<figure><img src="/files/vnSsaaNxs2pUbnKQYZ6O" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

As a result, customers will be redirected to the checkout with the discount code applied.

# Why my Shopify discount code doesn't work?

There are several cases when the discount code won't be applied at the Shopify checkout, despite it being generated properly. In this guide, we present how to recognize the most common issues and how to solve them.

Your customer may see one of the following messages

* [Discount code isn’t available to you right now](#discount-code-isnt-available-to-you-right-now)
* [Discount code isn’t valid for the items in your cart](#discount-code-isnt-valid-for-the-items-in-your-cart)
* [Enter a valid discount code](#enter-a-valid-discount-code)

Below, we present more detailed reasons behind these messages.

### The discount code isn’t available to you right now <a href="#discount-code-isnt-available-to-you-right-now" id="discount-code-isnt-available-to-you-right-now"></a>

<figure><img src="/files/JW6DkeEtrzAQpy4RQYin" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### The customer has to use the same email address on the checkout page as the email address entered to receive the discount

It is a common case when a customer tries to place an order using a different email address than the one provided when signing up for your newsletter.

<figure><img src="/files/DN3uQtJz6l5mhCz7a6Hp" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

If you want to check whether a discount code is assigned to a particular email address, open your **Shopify admin panel** and click **Discounts** from the left-hand sidebar.

<figure><img src="/files/QhFmOOE6tCrK5fc5SME0" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Discount is limited to a specific customer

This is a similar case as above. The only difference is the restriction was added in the Discounts section after the code was generated.

<figure><img src="/files/2F0sVG7rguq43pSYVuiL" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/RmVjmIMFalS4xjJA6wV2" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### The discount code isn’t valid for the items in your cart <a href="#discount-code-isnt-valid-for-the-items-in-your-cart" id="discount-code-isnt-valid-for-the-items-in-your-cart"></a>

<figure><img src="/files/21SR6Xy03EXeq03ZXiSG" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Discount is limited to a selected product or products from a collection that are not added to the cart

When a customer has added products from a collection covered by discount and from another collection, then the discount will be applied only for products from the first one. If they don't add any product from the discounted collection, the code won't be applied.

<figure><img src="/files/pv8SaBORarlZroamEcJ1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### The selected collection is empty

Go to your **Shopify admin panel** > **Products** > **Collections** and check whether your collection is not empty.

<figure><img src="/files/aPXfOWwjsPAQ1uPKiF2O" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Discount has a minimum amount requirement

The same warning will appear when a customer hasn't achieved the **minimum purchase amount**.

<figure><img src="/files/EbI3i6J7Xx051f6beKQ4" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can check it also in the section **Discounts**.

<figure><img src="/files/gKpZmniQzrRYniieB5a6" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Enter a valid discount code <a href="#enter-a-valid-discount-code" id="enter-a-valid-discount-code"></a>

<figure><img src="/files/tXLzsXcEg3b7zMFyyzeC" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### The expiration date has already passed

<figure><img src="/files/w2tZEIu6Pzt5b30h6v87" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The expiration date can check here: **Shopify admin panel** > **Discounts**.

<figure><img src="/files/HlLJgdCQLpuNVuEfX6hh" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### There is a typo in the discount code

A customer might have mistyped the discount code. This may happen especially for letters that look similar. For example:

* l and I (lowercase L and uppercase i)
* 0 and O (digit 0 and uppercase o)

# My Shopify customer's discount code was applied, but it shouldn't

Have you noticed that some customer discount codes are being used even though they shouldn't be? Here's explained what could be the reason.

#### The discount could have been created with previous settings that didn’t include current restrictions

If the discount was generated before the restrictions were changed in your automation, it won't be affected by the changes. This can happen during the automation when you add the **Minimum purchase amount**, for example, or **restrict the discount to the customer who has placed the order**.

<figure><img src="/files/XiXEHAdlTmBT3fQ9Swaf" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The settings of a particular discount code can check in the section **Discounts** from the **Shopify admin panel**.

<figure><img src="/files/PxBwYIvycpec19DZ5kV8" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

If you need to change the details of a particular discount code, just click it and modify desired parameters.

<figure><img src="/files/JJfBMJWpVO0nXzqAFvcZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Customer eligibility is not respected

I checked the Customer Eligibility checkbox, but I was able to use the unique coupon code issued for another person. What other settings do I need to make so that only the person who received the coupon code can use it?

<figure><img src="/files/g1mlKSIUJKxc1MoqQdC4" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This is the only setting needed to ensure that only the person who received the discount code can use it. Another person may still be able to enter the discount code, and see a reduced price. However, when the other person fills in the checkout form, then Shopify will inform that the discount code is not valid. It will also revert the original price.

<figure><img src="/files/SumDfEkRUTqUbIfCT5IA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Some of my subscribers in Klaviyo don't have a discount code generated in Personal Discount

#### Some of my subscribers in Klaviyo don't have a discount code generated in Personal Discount. Why is that?

The discount codes in emails sent from Klaviyo and any other email marketing provider, besides Mailchimp, are being generated at the moment when recipients open their emails. Additionally, external images have to be enabled and loaded in the email client.

<figure><img src="/files/qzRNg7zEZmIStNB27cOi" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can check the contact profile in Klaviyo to see whether they received and opened the welcome email. Klaviyo relies on loading an external image to track email opens so this is a good test to check if a discount code has also been displayed.

<figure><img src="/files/MwVirEZoixScpyz0Dr5F" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Mailchimp is not sending emails with discount codes

#### I've set up a campaign with Personal Discount codes in Mailchimp but emails are not being sent to customers.

1\. Make sure that your campaign status in Mailchimp is **Sending**, and not Paused or Draft.

<figure><img src="/files/9l5hGATwWxfLn223nhkX" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2\. Check if the email filter condition for the discount code merge tag is **is not blank**. A common mistake to select the **is** condition and enter "not blank" as value.

<figure><img src="/files/eoKvOk2LT4s96Lga6kzm" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/7HRxKaeIrqB2Teprn8LN" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

# Discount codes are not appearing in the emails sent by Mailchimp

#### Sometimes Discounteo codes are not appearing in the emails sent by Mailchimp.

In some cases, Mailchimp may send the welcome email before Discounteo finishes generating and syncing the discount code. When this happens, the email can be sent without a discount code.

Previously, we recommended adding a filter to the automation trigger that allowed emails to be sent only when the **Shopify Discount Code** field was not empty. Mailchimp would recheck this condition after some time, and the email would eventually be sent with the discount code.

<figure><img src="/files/gv9UnfMSsoDYZBylXRVZ" alt="Mailchimp email Journey showing a filter that sends emails only when the discount code field contains a value."><figcaption><p>Mailchimp Journey with a filter checking whether the discount code field is not empty</p></figcaption></figure>

However, currently, Mailchimp no longer rechecks this condition. As a result, emails that do not meet the condition are never sent.

#### How to make sure your Mailchimp emails always include a discount code

To avoid this problem, update your Journey by adding a separate node that checks whether the field used to store the discount code is not empty.

* If the discount code has already been synced to Mailchimp, the email will be sent immediately.
* If the discount code is not yet available, the email will be sent after a delay. Please note that the minimum delay supported by Mailchimp is **1 hour**.

<figure><img src="/files/JDRXrAikMEbs5SXWNHTL" alt="Mailchimp welcome automation email displaying a Shopify discount code sent to a new subscriber"><figcaption><p>Mailchimp welcome automation sending an email with a Shopify discount code</p></figcaption></figure>

If you previously set a *discount code is not blank* condition directly on the trigger node, remember to remove it.

#### Alternative way to send Shopify discount codes instantly in Mailchimp

If you want all Mailchimp emails with a discount code to be sent immediately, you can use an alternative integration method. With this approach, the discount code is displayed in the email as a clickable image that redirects customers to your store with the discount automatically applied at checkout.

[How to display a discount code as an image in a Mailchimp message](/personal-discount-for-shopify/integrate-personal-discount-with-your-email-service-provider/mailchimp/how-to-display-a-discount-code-as-an-image-in-a-mailchimp-message)

# I have received << Test discount code >> instead of real discount code in the Mailchimp test message

I have sent a test email from Mailchimp. I have received << Test Discount code >> in the message instead of the actual code assigned to the subscriber. Have I done something wrong?

<figure><img src="/files/hAMKDkp6ftZZ5qoqx9mD" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<< Test Shopify Discount Code >> indicates that it is a test email sent from Mailchimp. Mailchimp does not add actual merge tag values in test emails.

<figure><img src="/files/NHhWSLYbCbjdJZ2nJMAA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

As you can see, the same is true of the subscriber's first name. If you want to test generating discount codes, you need to sign up for a newsletter/place a test order in your shop, or take another action depending on which trigger you have set up.

# Apply a coupon code via URL in WooCommerce

When you send a coupon code in an email then a recipient has to:

1\. Select the code\
2\. Copy it to clipboard\
3\. Paste the code on the Cart page\
4\. Click on Apply coupon

You can make your customers life easier by sending a link that will automatically apply the coupon code.&#x20;

First, you need to install our free [Woo Coupon URL](https://wordpress.org/plugins/woo-coupon-url/) plugin:

![](/files/-La72h_i753GI8s0KrIQ)

Then, in your email template in Mailchimp you can construct the URL like this:

```
https://shop.example.com/?coupon=*|COUPON|*
```

{% hint style="info" %}
Replace shop.example.com with your e-commerce website domain.
{% endhint %}

![](/files/-La72F1Ref0ORCgf1b-N)

Mailchimp will show an error message that the URL is invalid. It's because \* and | are not acceptable in a web address. You can safely ignore it and click Insert. Mailchimp will replace the merge tag with an actual coupon code before sending the email, and the final URL will be valid.

# Create a Cart Price Rule in Magento 2.x

An automation in Personal Discount needs a Cart Price Rule to which it will be adding coupon codes.

You can prepare a Cart Price Rule in your Magento admin panel.

Navigate to Marketing > Cart Price Rules and click on Add New Rule.

![Magento Cart Price Rules](/files/-L_kg_VvCjMyFTxEQDVm)

Cart Price Rules in Magento provide a variety of options. The essential ones are:

**Rule Name** - will appear on the select list in Personal Discount

![](/files/-L_kpf-wBAPM6rnTj_AH)

**Active** - yes

**Websites** - select all, unless you want to limit the coupon to specific website

**Customer Groups** - select all, unless you want to limit the coupon to a specific customer group

![](/files/-L_kq4W4jYVcT4XkH0C-)

&#x20;**Coupon** - Specific Coupon

&#x20;**Use Auto Generation** - checked, this is key for Personal Discount to work properly

![](/files/-L_kqcTefeavzjT14vMo)

**Uses per Coupon** - how many times a customer can use a coupon code

**Apply** - discount type, possible choices are:

* Percent of product price discount
* Fixed amount discount&#x20;
* Fixed amount discount for whole cart
* Buy X get Y

**Discount Amount**

![](/files/-L_ksS1BEdW29bvrVi0J)

Save the Price Rule and switch to Personal Discount automation settings. Now, you can select the newly created "Welcome 10% off" as a Cart price rule for your automation.

![](/files/-L_kt-HlQQH4rb5YJ6ki)

The automation will start adding coupon codes to the selected Price Rule. You can find the generated coupons in the Manage Coupon Codes section of your Cart Price Rule:

![](/files/-L_ku4gUJWH31k3C4-dg)

{% hint style="info" %}
You won't see expiration date in the coupon codes table, because it's a limitation of Magento API. However, Personal Discount keeps track of when the coupon should expire and removes them at a right time.
{% endhint %}

# Send unique coupons to new email subscribers using Mailchimp

Welcome your new subscribers with a unique and time-sensitive discount. Grow your email list faster.

### &#x20;How does it work?

We are gonna use the native functionalities of Mailchimp, such as automated campaigns and merge tags. More precisely, the workflow will look as such :

1. A user subscribe to your Mailchimp list.
2. Mailchimp notifies Personal Discount.
3. Personal Discount generates a coupon in your shop and pushes it to Mailchimp, using [merge tags](https://mailchimp.com/help/getting-started-with-merge-tags/).
4. Mailchimp sends an email, using the merge tag value to display the coupon.

Now, let's dig in the configuration steps!

### 1. Configuring Personal Discount

First of all, we will configure Personal Discount to generate a new coupon for each new subscriber. It will allow us to define the characteristics of the coupons, the discount value or the expiration date for example.

For this, visit your Dashboard (<https://app.personaldiscount.io/>) and click on the **CREATE  AUTOMATION** button.&#x20;

![Configuration example](/files/-LZeSr5wa75gjKbFDAzd)

### 2. Create a welcome campaign in Mailchimp

The next step is to create an **automated welcome campaign** in Mailchimp. If you're not sure how to do it, you can follow [the excellent tutorial provided by Mailchimp on the subject.](<https://mailchimp.com/help/create-an-automated-welcome-email/ >)

### 3. Include the discount code in the email template

To include the discount code, we use the **\*|COUPON|\*** merge tag. Here is an example :&#x20;

![Example of email campaign](/files/-LZeXCUxpYiBpeTU_TyA)

### 4. Wait for the coupon before sending the email

The coupons generated by Personal Discount will often be available a few seconds after a new subscription. Still, to be sure to not send an email without a coupon code, we need to ask Mailchimp to wait for the coupon to arrive.

This can be achieved by editing the campaign to filter by segment :

![Welcome email settings - Filter by segment or tag](/files/-M7Tnrf_98H5FV6oQ6zo)

Then, add a segment rule telling that the COUPON merge tag is not blank:

![Segment Email - COUPON is not blank](/files/-M7ToRJMhxOVMSDjpz5Q)

### Conclusion

Sending a discount to new subscribers is a good way to welcome potential clients!

# Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I use Personal Discount for free?

Yes, Personal Discount is free, up to 50 coupons generated per month.If you generate a coupon for your new newsletter subscribers, it means you can offer a discount to 50 of them per month.

### **Will the app stop generating discount codes when I cross the free plan limit and don't upgrade immediately?**

No, it's a soft limit. The application will continue to work. We will notify you and give you some time to upgrade.

### Why do I not see the expiration date of the coupons in my Magento store?

Due to some limitation in the Magento platform, you will be not able to see the expiration date of your coupons in your shop interface. You can however see the expiration dates in your Personal Discount dashboard. Personal Discount takes care of removing the expired coupons.

### Why is Personal Discount a standalone app instead of a plugin or extension that I could install in my store?&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
TL;DR\
For security reasons and easier maintenance.
{% endhint %}

Running Personal Discount as a standalone app means that we can only interact with your store through an API. This is a more secure approach than installing a plugin that runs code on the same server where your shop is hosted. Plugins have direct access to files on the server and to your database, whereas the API access has a limited scope.\
For example, when you connect Personal Discount to your WooCommerce store then we ask only for write permissions so that our app can create coupons but not read your data - no access to your customers or orders. \
When you approve the API access then Personal Discount receives only an API key that we additionally encrypt before storing it in the database. Your login and password are invisible to us so we can't log in to your store admin panel.\
Another reason for favoring the API approach is that we wanted to avoid dealing with different versions of WordPress or WooCommerce. Connecting through the API is more stable and easier to maintain since API versions don't change that often.\
Hosting Personal Discount on our server has also the advantage that we can release changes, bug fixes or new features immediately to all our users, as opposed to asking them to update a plugin manually.
